Olympic Update #5

EXCLUSIVE OLYMPIC UPDATE

USA Foiled in Team Saber
Team USA, who opened the games with a medal sweep, was foiled in team competition when the Ukraine and China teams swept them aside in their battle for gold in the first ever Olympic team saber competition. The USA team had to settle for bronze. It was a disappointing finish given their success in the opening days of competition. Mariel Zagunis, gold medalist for the individual saber said, "We were just on the wrong side of the fence today." Talking about fences, with today's third place finish, American Fence said in a press release they may be rethinking their deal with the team to place their pictures on construction fences nationwide.

Mongolia Wins First Ever Olympic Gold
Former wrestler Tuvshinbayar Naidan of Mongolia defeated Kazakhstans' Askhat Zhitkeyev for the gold in Men's 100Kg Judo Competition. So far the Americans have failed to even show up to the competitions. The reason you didn't see this on television is because the American broadcasters could not pronounce the names of any of the finalists.

Dinghy Races
As mentioned yesterday, the dingy competition starts tomorrow. Dinghy, not dingy, is a small sail boat. You may recall in the movies when the captain of the ship calls for his dinghy, or to prepare his dinghy, or to get his dinghy out. In the Olympics, dinghys come in various sizes ranging from 11 feet long to 16 feet long. There are a total of 11 events using dinghys, consisting of men, women and mixed sailing events. The sport has been a part of the Olympics since 1908 and was known as yachting. Today it is simply known as sailing. Sailors sailing dinghys are affectionately referred to as ding dongs.

Be Careful or You'll Shoot Your Eye Out!
French skeet shooter Veronique Girardet has been blind in one eye since she was two. But that didn't stop her from hitting 63 skeets out of a possible 75 in Olympic competition. Her effort was good enough for 16th place.
